Buritama lies in the northwest of São Paulo state, in open, gently rolling country given over largely to sugarcane and cattle. The town has the planned look common to settlements founded as the interior was opened up: a regular grid of blocks around a central square, with straight streets that end where the fields begin. From above, the edges are crisp and orderly.
The Tietê River runs nearby. Along this stretch it has been dammed into a chain of broad reservoirs for hydroelectric power and navigation, and the Nova Avanhandava plant stands within the municipality. The wide, branching water gives the map an irregular, lake-like counterweight to the town's straight lines, along with shoreline that reaches deep into the surrounding land.
