Bussum lies in the Gooi region of North Holland, southeast of Amsterdam. It grew in the late nineteenth century once the railway made it easy to reach the city, and many of its streets were laid out for spacious villas with gardens. On a map, that history shows as winding avenues and large green plots rather than a strict Dutch grid.
Since 2016 Bussum has been part of the municipality of Gooise Meren, together with Naarden and Muiden. Right next door is the fortified town of Naarden, with its famous star-shaped ramparts and moats. A Bussum map poster can include the edge of that remarkable outline, set against Bussum's softer, garden-town streets.
To the south and east, heathland and woods begin at the edge of town, another feature of the Gooi. In black and white, the villa districts become an elegant pattern of curves and irregular blocks, the railway cuts a straight line through them, and the open heath gives the composition space to breathe.

The star-shaped fortifications of neighbouring Naarden, with their bastions and moats, lie next to Bussum and are one of the most recognisable forms in Dutch mapping.
