Butzbach lies in the Wetterau, north of Frankfurt, at the edge of the Taunus hills. The map shows a classic historic town: an oval old town of narrow, irregular lanes, still partly enclosed by the line of its medieval walls, with a ring of later streets and newer districts spreading outward over the gently rolling countryside.
At the centre of the old town is a market square lined with half-timbered houses, often counted among the finest in Hesse. The course of the Roman Limes, the fortified frontier of the empire, runs through the hills nearby. Butzbach is also a railway junction on the line between Frankfurt and Giessen.
