Buzău sits where the Carpathian foothills fall away into the Wallachian plain, on the right bank of the Buzău River. From above, the city is compact and fairly regular, with a central area of older streets around the main square and larger blocks of apartment buildings beyond. The river runs along the northern side, with its wide gravel bed and floodplain.
The Crâng Park, a large wooded park on the city's western side, is one of Buzău's clearest map features and a favourite local green space. The city is also a long-established railway junction, where lines from Bucharest divide toward Moldavia and toward Brașov through the mountains.
