Cacimba de Dentro is a municipality in the Curimataú region of Paraíba, in Brazil's semi-arid northeast, close to the uplands around Araruna. The town is compact, a cluster of streets and blocks around its centre. On the map the land around it is a loose network of rural roads, small farms and the winding courses of streams that flow only after rain.
The name itself says something about the region. A cacimba is a hand-dug well or water hole, often made in a dry riverbed to reach the water below the sand, and such wells have long been essential in the sertão. Water, how scarce it is and how it is stored in small reservoirs and ponds, shapes both daily life here and the pattern seen from above.
