Caetés lies in the agreste of Pernambuco, the transitional zone between the humid coast and the dry sertão. The land is hilly and semi-arid, and the town is small. On a map it appears as a modest cluster of streets on uneven ground, with roads leading toward nearby Garanhuns and farm communities.
The town is widely known as the birthplace of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who was born in the area when it was still part of the municipality of Garanhuns. His family's move from the agreste to São Paulo in his childhood follows a migration path shared by many people from the region.
