Caltanissetta sits almost at the centre of Sicily, far from the coast, on high, uneven ground surrounded by open hills. From above, the city is compact and irregular. Its streets follow slopes and ridgelines, turning and stepping rather than running straight, and the built-up area thins quickly into farmland and bare hillsides.
The historic centre forms a dense core of narrow streets around a few main axes and squares, with the cathedral near the heart of the old town. Newer districts extend along the ridges and roads leading out of the city. Nearby hills and the ruins of an old castle mark the edges of the landscape and give the map a clear sense of height.
The city grew in importance in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as a centre of sulphur mining, and it is widely known for its Holy Week processions.
