Camberley sits in the far west of Surrey, close to the borders with Berkshire and Hampshire, which follow the Blackwater River. On a map the town appears as a compact centre wrapped in residential streets. Wide stretches of heathland and pine woods press in from the edges. The M3 motorway cuts across the south, a firm diagonal line against the softer patterns around it.
The town grew mostly in the Victorian era, shaped by the neighbouring Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, where officers of the British Army are trained. The academy's large grounds, with lakes, playing fields and woodland, sit on the western side of the map. They form a distinctive open area next to the finer street network of the town. The former Staff College was also located nearby.
