Canapi lies in the western interior of Alagoas, in northeastern Brazil, within the semi-arid region known as the sertão. The town is small and compact: a handful of streets meet near the centre, forming a short grid that quickly gives way to open land. From above, the built-up area appears as a small, dense patch in a wide, dry landscape.
The countryside around Canapi is shaped by the rhythm of dry and rainy seasons. Pastures, small farms and patches of caatinga, the thorny scrub vegetation of the sertão, cover the gently rolling land, and streams that flow only part of the year cross it. Dirt roads link the town to the farms and villages around it.
