Çankırı is the capital of its province in north-central Anatolia, north-east of Ankara. It lies in a valley surrounded by bare, rounded hills, and the town has grown along the valley floor, with the castle hill rising steeply above the older quarters.
From above, the historic centre forms a tight cluster of irregular streets at the foot of the hill, while newer districts spread out in straighter lines along the main roads and the valley. The surrounding landscape is open and sparsely built, typical of the Anatolian plateau.
