Capelinha sits in the north-east of Minas Gerais, on high ground at the edge of the Jequitinhonha valley region. On the map the town looks like a set of streets laid over rolling terrain. It has a central core with a main church and square, and neighbourhoods extend along ridges and down gentle slopes in several directions, giving it an irregular, branching outline.
The municipality is known for coffee grown on the surrounding plateaus, and large eucalyptus plantations are common in the landscape. Both are visible from above.
