Capitão Poço is in north-eastern Pará, in the Brazilian Amazon region but in an area that has been largely opened up for farming. The town itself is relatively young and planned, and from above it appears as a compact, mostly regular grid of streets. The blocks are wide and the pattern is simple, typical of towns founded in the region during the twentieth century.
The contrast with the surroundings is sharp on the map. Outside the grid, rural roads run long distances in straight or gently bending lines, connecting smallholdings, farms and villages. Streams and patches of remaining forest show up as the only irregular shapes in the landscape.
