Capivari lies in the interior of São Paulo state, in a farming region long associated with sugar cane. The town takes its name from the Capivari river, which passes close by on its way toward the Tietê, and from above its streets form a steady grid that has grown outward from an older centre into newer residential neighbourhoods.
Capivari is the birthplace of the painter Tarsila do Amaral, one of the central figures of Brazilian modernism, born here in 1886. The town keeps that connection alive, and for a place linked to an artist of bold, simplified forms, a clean map makes a fitting portrait: geometric blocks, a curving river and open land beyond.
