Caraguatatuba lies on the northern coast of São Paulo state, where the Serra do Mar mountains come close to the Atlantic. The city stretches along a wide bay. Its streets are squeezed into a narrow coastal strip between the sea and forested slopes that rise almost straight up behind the last blocks.
The island of Ilhabela sits just offshore to the southeast, across the channel from São Sebastião. The Tamoios highway climbs the escarpment and links the coast with the Paraíba Valley and the city of São José dos Campos. In summer the population grows sharply with visitors from inland São Paulo, who come for the beaches.
