Cariamanga is the main town of Calvas canton in the province of Loja, in the far south of Ecuador near the Peruvian border. It sits in the Andes, surrounded by steep green slopes and valleys, and its streets are laid out across uneven ground. On a map the town appears as a grid adapted to the terrain, with blocks stretching and bending where the land rises.
Above the town rises the Ahuaca, a large rock formation that dominates the local skyline and is a familiar landmark for anyone from the area. The town is also a commercial centre for the surrounding rural parishes, where farming on the mountain slopes shapes both the landscape and daily life. Roads wind out of Cariamanga toward these communities and toward Loja.
