Carmarthen rises from the north bank of the River Tywi in southwest Wales. The river loops wide across its flood meadows below the town, and bridges carry roads over to the south. On the higher ground, a knot of medieval streets gathers around the site of the castle. Newer housing spreads north and west across the slopes beyond it.
Carmarthen is often described as one of the oldest towns in Wales. The Romans had a fort and town here called Moridunum, and the remains of its amphitheatre still exist on the eastern side. The name is linked with Merlin in Welsh legend, and the town has long served as the market and administrative centre for the surrounding county.
A Carmarthen map poster has a satisfying balance. The river is broad and open, and the old centre is compact and irregular, with streets winding up from the water and around the castle hill. Ring roads and approach roads wrap the town and set it apart from the green country of the Tywi valley.
