Carmen de Areco lies in the north of Buenos Aires Province, in the farming heartland west of the capital. From above, the town follows the familiar Argentine layout: a regular grid of square blocks arranged around a main plaza. The edges are sharp and straight where the urban blocks meet the fields.
The surrounding landscape is almost perfectly flat, divided by rural roads into large rectangles of cropland and pasture. The Areco river area adds a rare meandering line to that geometric countryside. Beyond the town's edge, the pattern of the pampas extends in every direction with few interruptions.
