Carmo do Cajuru is in the centre-west of Minas Gerais, a short distance from Divinópolis, in hilly country of pasture and small farms. The Pará River runs nearby, and a dam on the river created a reservoir whose shoreline shapes much of the landscape around the town. On a map, the water is as noticeable as the streets.
The town itself is compact, with a grid of streets around its church square that bends to fit the slopes. Roads wind outwards across the hills, and the reservoir's irregular edges, with long inlets reaching into the valleys, add an organic shape to the frame.
