Carterton Map Poster & Print
Carterton is a young town by English standards. It was founded in the early twentieth century, when William Carter bought farmland west of Oxford and sold it in plots to people moving out of the city. That origin still shows from above. The roads are straighter and more regular than in the old market towns nearby, and the housing grew outward in clear blocks.
The biggest shape on the map is not the town at all. It is RAF Brize Norton, the Royal Air Force's largest station, whose runway and hangars lie to the south. The airfield's pale geometry sits right beside the residential grid, and much of Carterton's later growth came from families connected to the base.
