Mangrove channels
Tidal creeks branch through the mangroves around the town. On the map they form a fine, irregular network that contrasts sharply with the straight streets.

Carutapera Map Poster & Print
Carutapera lies on the far northwestern coast of Maranhão, close to the border with Pará. This is one of Brazil's most indented shorelines, where mangroves and tidal inlets cut deep into the land. On a map the town's streets end suddenly at irregular water, and the coastline around them splits into islands, creeks and mudflats that shift with the tide.
The town itself has a simple layout: a modest grid of streets near the waterfront, with roads leading inland across low ground. Fishing and river traffic have long shaped life here, and the map shows why. Water wraps around the town on several sides, so the settlement reads as a small piece of solid ground between the forest and the sea.
A Carutapera map poster is mostly about that edge. In black and white the mangrove channels become fine branching lines, a little like leaf veins, and the town's grid sits among them as the only regular pattern. It is a coastal map that looks quite unlike the smooth beaches people usually picture.

Waterfront grid
A compact block pattern runs down to the water. The streets stop abruptly where the land gives way to channels and mudflats, which marks the town's edge very clearly.
Road inland
One main road leaves the coast and heads across the low ground into the interior. It is the single firm link between this watery shoreline and the rest of Maranhão.

Carutaperaを選ぶ理由
想いが詰まった地図
Anyone from the coast of Maranhão will recognise the broken shoreline instantly. For everyone else, it is an unusual and striking map, more like a drawing of roots than a street plan, and it holds up well at large sizes.
Add a family name, a date or a personal line to the title and subtitle, and choose from five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. There is a free watermarked preview, and the full HD files cost $9.
