Casablanca sits in a broad valley in the Valparaíso region, roughly halfway between the capital and the port city. Route 68 runs past the town on its way to the coast. From above, it looks like a small, orderly settlement surrounded by an open landscape of cultivated fields. Rounded hills of the coastal range rise gently at the edges.
The town was founded in the eighteenth century, and its core still follows the Spanish colonial pattern of square blocks around a central plaza. Outside that grid the streets become fewer, and the land is divided into long parcels. Many of those parcels are vineyards, because the Casablanca Valley has become one of Chile's best-known cool-climate wine regions, noted especially for white wines.
