Cattolica stands at the southern end of the Romagna Riviera on the Adriatic, where the long, low sandy coast running down from Rimini finally meets the hills. Just beyond the town, the Tavollo stream marks the border with the Marche, and the headland of Gabicce rises from the sea. On a map, Cattolica is where a straight line of beach turns into a curve.
The town is arranged in bands parallel to the sea: the beach, the seafront promenade, a dense layer of hotels and apartment blocks, and then the older centre and the railway further inland. Streets cross these bands at right angles and form a clear grid. The fishing harbour sits in a canal at the southern end of town, where the Tavollo meets the sea, cutting a sharp notch into the shoreline.

By tradition, the town's name comes from Catholic bishops who stayed here in the fourth century during the Council of Rimini. Tavollo harbour canal
At the southern edge of town, the harbour canal on the Tavollo reaches inland from the sea. It marks the regional border, with Gabicce Mare on the far bank.

South of the harbour, the flat coast gives way to the rising ground of Gabicce and Monte San Bartolo. On the map, the streets there begin to curve.
