Çerkezköy sits on the rolling plain of eastern Thrace, in Tekirdağ province, between Istanbul and the Bulgarian border. From above, the land is flat and open. Field boundaries press right up to the edge of town, and the town is split between a compact residential core and the large, regular plots of its industrial zone.
The name means Circassian village, a reminder that the town began as a settlement of Circassian migrants in the late Ottoman period. The railway from Istanbul towards Edirne runs past the centre, and on a map its long, gentle line gives the whole street plan a clear axis. Newer neighbourhoods have grown out from it in straight, orderly blocks.
