Cesson-Sévigné borders Rennes to the east, and on the map the two blend together with only the ring road marking the change. The Vilaine river runs through the commune, winding between meadows and wooded banks, so the town has a green river corridor at its centre rather than a dense historic core.
Cesson is known as a centre for technology and research. Parts of the Rennes Atalante technology park and many digital and telecom businesses are based here, spread across campus-style sites with wide roads and roundabouts. Sports fans may know the name from the Cesson Rennes handball club.
