Chã Grande is in Pernambuco, on the route that runs west from Recife toward the Agreste. In Portuguese, chã means a plateau or flat upland, and the name fits: the town sits higher than the coastal plain, where the land begins to rise and the climate cools. Many travellers know it as one of the towns they pass through on the way inland.
On a map, the town stretches out along its main road, and side streets branch off where the ground allows. Where the terrain is gentle, blocks are fairly regular. Toward the edges they become looser and follow the slopes, and rural roads and farmland take over. The shape is long rather than round, like many Brazilian towns that grew along a highway.
