Chahe is a town in the Xuzhou area of northern Jiangsu, in the wide, flat country where the North China Plain meets the lowlands of the lower Huai basin. This is productive farmland. From above, the landscape is organised by a dense network of drainage and irrigation channels, straight rural roads and small villages spaced evenly across the fields.
The town itself forms a compact built-up area at the meeting point of several roads. Its streets are more regular than those of an old walled town, with larger blocks and a clear main axis. Beyond the edge, the pattern changes quickly to long, parallel field strips. Village clusters sit along the roads and waterways like beads on a string.
