Railway yards
Parallel tracks spread and gather again through the town. On the map this broad band of lines is the most striking feature, marking the division headquarters.

Chakradharpur Map Poster & Print
Chakradharpur is in the West Singhbhum district of Jharkhand, in the hilly, wooded Kolhan region of eastern India. The town is best known as the headquarters of the Chakradharpur division of the South Eastern Railway, and the railway shapes its map more than anything else. Broad sets of tracks, yards and railway colonies occupy a large part of the town.
On one side of the tracks the older bazaar area has narrow, uneven streets. On the other, railway housing is set out in more regular blocks, a pattern common to Indian railway towns. Roads leave the centre in several directions towards the surrounding villages and the mining and forest country beyond.
Outside the town the land rises into low, wooded hills, and the settlement thins quickly into fields and forest. A Chakradharpur map poster shows the town as it really is: a railway junction at the heart, with its streets and colonies arranged around the tracks.

Railway colonies
Staff housing laid out in orderly blocks next to the tracks, noticeably more regular than the older market streets across the line.
Wooded surroundings
Beyond the edge of town the road network thins out quickly into hills, forest and fields, leaving the town as a clearly defined cluster.
