Challapalle, often written Challapalli, lies in the Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh, on the low alluvial land of the Krishna river delta not far from the Bay of Bengal. The ground here is almost perfectly flat, and water rather than hills defines the landscape. From above, the town is a compact cluster of streets in a wide field of cultivated land.
The delta is crossed by irrigation canals, and their straight or gently curving lines form a second network alongside the roads. Streets gather into a denser core and then spread outward along the main routes to neighbouring villages. The town was historically the seat of a zamindari estate, and its name remains associated with the old Challapalli rajas. Like much of the Krishna delta, it depends on rice cultivation made possible by the canal system built in the nineteenth century. The result is a place shaped as much by engineering and farming as by the town itself.
