Chamalières is a town in Auvergne adjoining Clermont-Ferrand on its western side, where the city begins to climb toward the volcanic uplands. From above, it forms a continuous urban fabric with its larger neighbour, but its streets become steeper and more winding as they rise toward Royat and the hills beyond.
A Chamalières map poster shows this transition well. Straighter avenues and denser blocks lie near the boundary with Clermont-Ferrand, while curving roads follow the contours to the west. The small Tiretaine river runs through the valley, and villas, parks and gardens reflect the town's history as a residential and spa-adjacent area.
Chamalières is home to a Banque de France site involved in the production of euro banknotes, one of the town's best-known institutions. It is also associated with Valéry Giscard d'Estaing, who served as its mayor before becoming President of France. Beyond the town, the Puy de Dôme and the chain of volcanoes dominate the western horizon.
