Charleroi Map Poster & Print
Charleroi was founded in 1666 as a fortress and named after King Charles II of Spain. Its layout still reflects that origin: the Ville-Haute sits on a hill, with a round central square where the ramparts once stood, and the Ville-Basse runs down to the Sambre River.
Around the centre, the R9 inner ring road and the elevated loop of the metro form a tight circle of concrete. Beyond it, the Sambre, the Brussels–Charleroi canal, the rail lines and the old industrial sites form a dense tangle of lines.
The landscape around the city is marked by terrils, the tall slag heaps left over from coal mining, which now appear on the map as green hills. A Charleroi map poster shows how industry shaped the city, from the fortress square to the valley and its canals.
