Chester is an unincorporated community in Chesterfield County, Virginia, about halfway between Richmond and Petersburg. It began as a village on the old routes between those cities, and it still reads on a map as a corridor place. Interstate 95, US Route 1 and the railway run north to south through the area, and neighbourhoods fill the land between them.
East of the community the land falls toward the James and Appomattox rivers, which meet not far away. That brings river bends and wetland edges into the wider map. Residential streets mix older straight roads near the historic centre with the curving cul-de-sacs typical of later suburban growth.
