Chía Map Poster & Print
Chía lies on the Sabana de Bogotá, the high plateau north of Colombia's capital, and its map shows a town growing into open land. The old centre keeps the grid around a main square that is typical of colonial towns. From there, newer residential areas, gated developments and roads spread out across the flat sabana. Rivers wind through the fields nearby in loose meanders.
The name comes from the Muisca language and is linked to the moon goddess of the Muisca, who lived on this plateau long before the Spanish arrived. Today Chía is closely tied to Bogotá. Many people live here and commute south, and the Universidad de La Sabana has its campus within the municipality.
