Chiayi City lies on the flat Chianan Plain in south-western Taiwan, with the Central Mountain Range rising to the east. The city centre is laid out on a close grid, much of it from the Japanese colonial period. A few diagonal streets meet at roundabouts, and the main railway line runs north to south past the centre.
Chiayi is the starting point of the Alishan Forest Railway, a narrow-gauge line built in the early twentieth century to bring timber down from the mountain forests. On the map its track leaves the city eastward and begins to climb. It is one of the few lines that curves away from the otherwise orderly street pattern.
The city also has a large park on its eastern side and is known for turkey rice, a local dish served all over town. A Chiayi City map poster brings together the grid, the rail lines and the green spaces that make the centre easy to read. The farmland of the surrounding county frames it all.

The narrow-gauge line leaves Chiayi Station and heads east towards the mountains. It draws a single thin line that curves away from the city's straight streets.
Chiayi Park
On the eastern side of the city, the park and the green space around it form a large calm area on the map, set against the denser blocks nearby.
