Chiemsee Map Poster & Print
Chiemsee is the largest lake in Bavaria, often called the Bavarian Sea. Its shape is broad and irregular, with several bays along the western and northern shores and an open eastern basin, while the Alps rise immediately to the south.
In the western half lie two main islands. Herreninsel, the larger, holds Herrenchiemsee Palace, which Ludwig II of Bavaria modelled on Versailles. Fraueninsel, much smaller, has a Benedictine convent and a fishing village. Between them lies Krautinsel, a small uninhabited island. Prien am Chiemsee sits on the western shore, the main point of departure for boats.
A motorway runs close to the southern shore, adding a strong line to the composition. A Chiemsee map poster shows the lake with its islands, bays and the transition from the flat northern land to the mountains in the south.
