Chilecito Map Poster & Print
Chilecito is located in the province of La Rioja in northwestern Argentina, in a valley at the foot of the Sierra de Famatina. Its name, meaning "little Chile", refers to Chilean miners who came to work here. On a map, the town is a compact grid of irrigated streets surrounded by arid land and mountains.
Mining shaped the town's history. In the early twentieth century, a cable car system known as the Cablecarril La Mejicana was built to transport ore from the high mines of Famatina down to Chilecito. This long aerial line, now a heritage site, climbed thousands of metres into the mountains.
The valley also produces wine, especially Torrontés, and walnuts, and vineyards appear around the edges of the urban area. A Chilecito map poster shows a clear contrast: a regular grid and cultivated plots on one side, and the empty, rising slopes of the Andes foothills on the other.
