Chimichagua lies in Cesar Department in northern Colombia, on the western shore of the Ciénaga de Zapatosa, a large freshwater wetland in the lowlands where the Cesar River approaches the Magdalena. On a map water is the defining element. The town's modest grid sits right at the edge of a wide, irregular body of water that fills much of the frame.
The Zapatosa wetland is one of the largest in Colombia, a system of open water, marsh and seasonally flooded land. It supports fishing communities around its shores. Chimichagua's streets form a compact, regular pattern that ends at the waterfront, and small boats and landing points connect the town to the wetland.
