Chippenham grew up where the Bristol Avon makes a wide bend through north Wiltshire. On a map, the river curves around the old centre on three sides. The historic core is a tight group of streets around the Market Place, with narrow plots running back from the frontages as they have done for centuries. A town bridge crosses the river to the south.
The Great Western Railway crosses the northern side of the centre. Brunel's line runs through on a viaduct and embankment, drawing a firm line across the older street pattern. Beyond it, the town spreads out in twentieth-century estates and newer developments, with the M4 running east to west a few miles to the north.
A Chippenham map poster shows a classic English market town layout: a river loop, a compact medieval core, a railway that cuts across both, and newer suburbs around the outside. The river's curve is the most striking feature, and it looks especially clean when reduced to black and white.
