Chisec is a municipality in the north of Alta Verapaz, Guatemala, in a region of limestone karst where the land is folded into steep hills, sinkholes and caves. The Candelaria cave system, one of the best-known in the country, lies in the wider area, and much of the population is Q'eqchi' Maya.
The town itself is compact, with a small grid of streets around its centre and roads leaving for neighbouring communities. Beyond the edges, the map becomes a pattern of forest, farmland and scattered villages linked by winding routes that respond to the uneven karst terrain.
