Chrudim is one of the older towns of East Bohemia, built on a rise above the Chrudimka river. On a map the historic core is easy to pick out: a compact oval of streets on the high ground, with the elongated main square at its centre and the river curving around its northern side.
The town is widely known in the Czech Republic for puppetry. It is home to a museum of puppetry cultures and hosts a long-running national amateur puppet theatre festival each summer. The historic centre, with its square and church towers, remains the focal point that newer housing estates and industrial districts have grown around.
