Clacton-on-Sea lies on the Essex coast, facing the North Sea. On a map, the town is defined by its long shoreline. The streets run inland from the seafront in a fairly regular pattern, and the coast forms a clean, gently curving edge along the whole frame. Holland-on-Sea continues to the north-east, and Jaywick lies to the south-west.
The resort was developed from 1871 by the engineer Peter Bruff, and the pier opened the same year. Its planned origins show in the tidy layout near the seafront, where roads lead directly to the promenade and beach. The pier extends into the sea as a single thin line, one of the most recognisable features on the map.
Along the coast stand Martello towers, built in the early nineteenth century to guard against invasion. They are a reminder of the area's history before tourism.
