Colgong, also known as Kahalgaon, lies on the south bank of the Ganges in Bihar's Bhagalpur district. The river sets the terms here. On a map the town's streets bend along the bank, and the broad water with its sandbars fills much of the frame. Rocky outcrops in the river nearby have long been a local landmark.
Just inland lie the ruins of Vikramashila, one of the great Buddhist monastic universities of ancient India. The site gives the area a depth that reaches well beyond its present size. A large thermal power station also stands nearby, and its geometric footprint marks the more recent chapter of the local landscape.
