Colombes lies north-west of Paris in Hauts-de-Seine, within the broad loop of the Seine that also holds Asnières-sur-Seine and Gennevilliers. The river touches the town on its western side, and from above Colombes appears as a continuous, fine-grained urban fabric that merges with its neighbours, with no gap between one suburb and the next.
The street pattern mixes an older town centre, rows of small houses on narrow plots and larger postwar housing estates, cut through by railway lines towards Saint-Lazare and by the A86 motorway. The result is a detailed, busy map where the rail corridors and main avenues provide the structure.
Colombes has a place in sporting history: the Stade Yves-du-Manoir was the main stadium of the 1924 Paris Olympics and returned to Olympic use in 2024 for hockey.
