Comitán Map Poster
Comitán sits on a high plateau in eastern Chiapas, and its streets show a colonial grid adjusted to rolling ground. Around the central square the blocks are regular, but toward the edges they tilt and curve with the hills. The Pan-American Highway passes along the town, linking it with San Cristóbal de las Casas to the northwest and the Guatemalan border to the southeast.
The full name is Comitán de Domínguez, after Belisario Domínguez, a senator born here who was killed in 1913 after speaking out against the Huerta regime. Travellers know the town as the base for the Lagunas de Montebello, a group of coloured lakes set in pine forest near the border.
