Coronel João Sá lies in the far northeast of Bahia, close to the border with Sergipe, in the semi-arid country known as the sertão. From above, the town is a small, dense cluster of streets and squares with low houses built close together, surrounded by a much larger rural territory of scattered farms, dirt roads and dry scrub.
Like many municipalities of the sertão, it covers a wide area in which the town itself takes up only a small part. Roads leave the centre in several directions toward farms, villages and neighbouring towns, and life here follows the rhythms of rain and drought typical of the Bahian interior. The street plan is plain and practical, shaped by growth rather than design.
