Costa Rica is a municipality in the northeast of Mato Grosso do Sul, close to the borders with Goiás and Mato Grosso. It shares its name with the Central American country but lies deep inside Brazil. The town is laid out as a regular grid of wide blocks on open plateau land, with roads leading out in straight lines.
The area around it is cerrado, the savanna of central Brazil, now largely turned over to farming. From above, the town sits among large field shapes and pasture, and the size of the fields makes the urban grid look small and tidy.
The Sucuriú River runs through the municipality, and its waterfalls are protected in a municipal park that draws visitors from across the state. A Costa Rica map poster shows a frontier farming town on the high interior plateau, where straight streets meet winding river valleys at the edge of town.
