Craiova Map Poster & Print
Craiova is the largest city in Oltenia, the region of south-western Romania between the Carpathians and the Danube. From above, it spreads across low ground east of the Jiu River. Boulevards run out from a compact centre, and large blocks of housing estates surround it. Tree-lined avenues and wide intersections give the plan an orderly, open rhythm.
The city grew as the seat of the Bans of Oltenia and later as a regional centre of trade, education and industry. Constantin Brâncuși studied at its school of arts and crafts. Craiova's most famous open space is Nicolae Romanescu Park, laid out in the early twentieth century with a lake, a suspension bridge and winding paths.

The residential districts form large, regular cells, and to the west the floodplain of the Jiu leaves a broad, quiet margin across the frame.

Mihai Viteazul Square and the pedestrian streets around it form the historic core. The lines are finer and more irregular here than in the planned districts that ring the centre.
Jiu floodplain
West of the city the Jiu River crosses a wide, flat floodplain. The built-up area stops short of it, which leaves a clean open edge on one side of the poster.
