Cruces is a town in Cienfuegos Province in central Cuba, set among the plains that have long been devoted to sugar cane. The area has a notable place in Cuban history: the battle of Mal Tiempo, one of the significant engagements of the 1895 War of Independence, was fought nearby.
On a map, Cruces shows the familiar structure of a Cuban provincial town: a regular grid of streets with a central park, framed by main roads and crossed by railway lines that once carried cane and sugar. The town is compact, and its edges give way quickly to fields and rural roads spreading across level ground.
