Cuddalore lies on the Coromandel coast of Tamil Nadu, south of Puducherry. The town sits at the mouths of the Gadilam and Uppanar rivers, and the map shows a complex pattern of estuaries, backwaters and low-lying land between the sea and the town's streets.
The town has two main parts: the old town near the coast and the newer area around Thirupapuliyur inland. Near the shore stand the remains of Fort St David, a British East India Company fort from the late seventeenth century, once an important base on this coast.
A Cuddalore map poster captures the interplay between water and settlement. The long, straight beach, including Silver Beach, contrasts with the winding river channels. The coast was badly hit by the 2004 tsunami, and the town has since rebuilt along the shore.
