Cumanacoa lies inland from the city of Cumaná in Sucre state, in a valley surrounded by mountains. On the map, the town appears as a compact grid of streets in the Spanish colonial pattern, built around a central plaza on the flat valley floor. The streets end where the slopes begin, and roads leave in only a few directions following the valley.
The Manzanares River, which reaches the sea at Cumaná, runs through this valley, and its course is part of the landscape around the town. Farmland lines the valley floor, and the roads leading out of the grid follow the river and the lower ground. The mountains appear on the map as areas with few roads, framing the town.
