Cumaribo is the seat of a municipality in Colombia's Vichada Department. By area, the municipality is among the largest in the country, covering a huge stretch of the eastern plains. The town itself is small. On the map it appears as a compact grid of streets on level ground, surrounded by great distances.
This is Llanos country: grassland savanna broken by strips of gallery forest along the rivers. The waterways run east toward the Orinoco, and in the rainy season they swell and spread across the low ground. Roads are few and long, and the town is linked to other settlements by routes that run for hours across open plain.
